The Erythroxylum catuaba is a small and sturdy tree that grows in northern areas of Brazil: Para, Pernambuco, Bahia, Maranhao, and Alagoas. Tree of catuaba belongs to the family of Erythroxylaceae, whose principal genus, the Erythroxylum, contains several species that are sources of cocaine. However, the catuaba does not contain any of the active cocaine alkaloids.

The chemical constituents present in some catuaba include alkaloids, tannins, aromatic oils and fatty resins, phytosterols, flavonoids and many other elements. Some of those elements found in the cortex, a study of 1958 has given property antibacterial and anti-carcinogenic.
More recent studies have confirmed the antibacterial properties of catuaba, and have shown the antiviral action. A study in 1992 showed that the catuaba was effective against infection by Escherichia coli and Staphilococcus aureus, in addition to significantly inhibit the uptake of HIV.
Other studies, in 1997 and 2000, reported as the bark of catuaba had analgesic properties and vascular dilator.

In folk medicine, the catuaba is known for its aphrodisiac action. In the Brazilian state of Minas is said that "Until a father has less than 60 years, the child is his, after 60 years, is the son of catuaba."
Although no study has ever validated this traditional use, the catuaba is still considered by a Brazilian folk medicine central nervous system stimulant with aphrodisiac properties. The decoction of the bark is commonly used for impotence, nervousness, state of agitation, weakness, lack of memory and sexual weakness, and for many nervous problems such as insomnia, the hypochondria, the sciatica and neuralgia.
